There are a number of reasons why simmers may wish the have a dedicated computer running the Flight Simulator, and another networked computer running support applications. With specific respect to the operation of It’s Your Plane (IYP), one major reason comes to mind…
The personal computer that operates your simulator imposes a high demand on system resources. When the IYP application is added, along with the Speech Recognition and Text-To-Speech engine servers, it places an even heavier load on the system. Depending upon the computer being used, the addition of the IYP application can adversely affect the performance of the simulator.
By running IYP on a client, across the network, there’s a dramatic increase in the performance of both the simulator and IYP.
And, the latest version of the IYP application permits simmers to operate IYP on another PC (aka Client machine) across a Network through integration with Pete Dowson’s WideFS programme.
The IYP Dialogue Window Solution
Since the Speech Recognition and Text-To-Speech in now on the Client machine, the usual truncated text of the dialogue between captain and co-pilot/first officer in the Speech Bar of the simulator no longer exists. Instead the complete, real-time text now appears in a dedicated Dialogue Window on the IYP control panel of the client.
An Added Dialogue Window Benefit
IYP is often used as a training tool by new simmers. If simmers are not sure what to do next, or where control switches and buttons can be found, all they need to say is, “Please help me.” The co-pilot responds with a detailed explanation of the needed manoeuvre, or describes where the switch can be found on the instrument panel. The new Dialogue Window enables the simmer to read (and re-read if necessary) the detailed instructions just given by the co-pilot. The text remains on the screen until the pilot issues another command.
