All this messing about with forums

by mark.avey on May 23, 2007

Okay, it’s about time I explained what’s been going on with the message board/forum!

When I first created FlightSimX, I added a phpBB based message board to the site, which proved fairly popular. Unfortunately, it’s popularity with spammers was also all too evident. I managed to get rid of most of them before they actually got to post, but it got to the point where I had about 50 spammers a day trying to join. I eventually got sick of this and pulled access to it.

A few weeks back, I decided to reinstate it and, guess what?! You got it, back they came. Reading all the various forums, it seems that phpBB’s attract them all too often.

I experimented a little with Tangler as a message board system for the site, but it doesn’t have the flexibility I’d like.

So, I’ve finally decided on Vanilla as my forum of choice for FlightSimX. You can find it here. Read the first sticky post under the General category and by all means please join in and enjoy yourself. Corny cliche, but remember, the forum needs your input to make it successful. I’ve spent far too much time over the months coming up with a working solution. I hope this is it. It either succeeds or it doesn’t!

Nothing changes with the main site, the updates will keep coming thick and fast, but it’s always nice to have some feedback, so I’d love for you to leave a comment on either the posts themselves or through the new forum.

There’s a permanent link to the forum at the top of each page, so you’ve no excuse for not visiting :)
