Can a civilian land an airliner?

There’s an interesting post on The Boston Diaries about someone who got a chance to "fly" a commercial simulator. I thought the most telling quote was "I found landing the airplane quite easy. In fact, it was much easier to land the Airbus 320 than it ever was to land any number of craft on various microcomputer simulations like Microsoft Flight Simulator."

You can read the rest of the post here.

With dedicated control systems and purely programmed flight dynamics providing ’seat of the pants’ feedback, I would imagine it would be easier to operate. I bet it all falls apart when you fly the real thing though!

I remember my first time in the Piper, as soon as we’re at 2000ft everything I knew about the control system and gauges went out the window as I over concentrated and struggled to keep the craft stable and facing the horizon.

I remember being pretty pleased with myself on my first “real” flight when the instructor said he couldn’t believe I’d not flown an aircraft before. He was quite happy leaving it to me once we’d got off the ground until about 2 minutes before touchdown - guess he didn’t trust me that much :)
