Defending Microsoft

François over on FlightSimPlaza has written a post on his personal blog detailing some of the "sniping" that has been taking place recently towards Microsoft, their new ESP product and Phil Taylor in particular.

He’s raised a lot of interesting points. In the past, I, too, have been at least partly guilty in that regard and, for that, I apologise. I’ve also taken the odd swipe at Phil Taylor (see this post), for which I again apologise. That was wholly unjustified and mainly down to me not knowing all the facts, for which I have no excuse.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Phil’s doing a marvelous job of keeping us informed about new developments and also about how to get the most from MSFS. For that, I, and I’m sure many others, are extremely grateful. In this age of huge faceless corporations, it’s almost unheard of for someone at the core of the product to provide this level of personal involvement.

I, for one, hope that Phil continues to provide this excellent service. I’ve learnt an awful lot from his posts in the past.

Just think back a couple of years, to the pre-blog-explosion era when about the only announcement you ever got was a new release of MSFS turning up in the shops. We’ve come a long way.

As for ESP, well, even I’ve had questions asked as to why I would mention it here on FlightSimX. Well, why not? This is a site related to simulators and ESP is a simulator. Granted, not many of us are likely to have a copy in our own homes, but it’s still interesting, isn’t it? As for Microsoft developing it in the first place, again, why not? They’re a business. They have a product which has had many years of solid development invested in it. Why not use that knowledge for a commercial application? And, I’m sure that a lot of the ESP team knowledge will one day find its way back into MSFS, which can’t be a bad thing.
