Microsoft Flight Simulator X For Pilots: Real World Training

by mark.avey on June 20, 2007

This recently updated book is now available from the FlightSim Pilot Shop and looks like a useful addition to your library:

“Strap in and ride along as certified flight instructors Kevin Lane-Cummings and Jeff Van West raise the landing gear on this guide to using Microsoft Flight Simulator X. This book takes you through the pilot ratings as it is done in the real world: You start with Sport Pilot training, then Private Pilot, followed by the Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot, and Air Transport Pilot.

Aspiring pilots will learn the skills of flight, how to master Flight Simulator, and how to utilize the software as a learning tool towards their pilot’s licenses. Those who already have their real-world wings will benefit from guidance on how Flight Simulator X can be used as a continuing learning tool, how to simulate real-world emergencies, and how to use it for training towards advanced certifications.

And those who favor simulation to real-world flying will find tips for making their sim experience as real as possible.

These 750 pages are packed with detailed information on using Flight Simulator X for training, including:

  • Introduction to flight operations
  • The fundamentals of aircraft control and flight
  • Performance takeoffs and landings
  • Airport operations and working with air traffic control
  • Radio navigation with traditional avionics and glass-cockpit technology
  • Instrument approaches, including the use of GPS and glass-cockpits
  • Commercial flight maneuvers
  • Emergency situations you can safely experience only in a simulator
  • Piloting high-performance aircraft and jets
  • Using multiplayer and shared cockpits for realistic air traffic control and training”

Bah Humbug, another bite at the credit card. Just ordered from one of Amazon’s companion shops for £9.99. I guess most of this information is available on the net but having it all in one place and being able to go through it in a logical order as per the real world is going to be a bonus. I have a dream of getting my PPL and this should help though I would imagine it’s based on the US qualifications (is there a difference?).

This is the first I have heard of the book, and it looks as though I may be adding it to my rather small flight sim library, ( zero at the moment ). Oh well, you have to start somewhere and this looks to be the ticket!

I’d love some feedback on the book when you get it guys. Did you see my earlier post regarding the free books online? They’re old, but still useful. The original post is at http://www.flightsimx.co.uk/?p=364

Thanks Mark, missed that posting but have added it to my favourites to check out when I get some reading time. Like you say the basics will still be the same even if the software has changed. I’d be happy to post a review of the new book once it’s arrived and I’ve spent some time with it.

A review would be great. I was thinking of asking around to see if anyone wanted to do any “guest posts”.

Hi Mark, the book arrived today, do you have any requirements in mind for a review. There’s a lot of book here. So I could either wait until I’ve been through it (some time), or post initial musings and updates. I could host this on my site until it’s finished at which point you could host it, or I could just make additional post’s in this thread !?!

Hi PieEater. A multi-part review sounds good. I could publish the initial part in one post, then update it as you go along and let people know about changes with a new post.

Thanks for your help :)

What format would work best for you Mark, I’d want to include pictures so either a Word document or an HTML document from Front Page? I’ll try and put something together in the next couple of days.

Either of those two options is fine for me, PieEater, so whatever is easiest for you.

Hi Mark, I’ve uploaded the first part for you to download and check over;

If you think it’s too wordy or you need me to change anything let me know. I’m happy for you to change the format but any changes to the text I’d like you to run past me first.

I’ll want to go through the next section of the book before I write some more.
