F/A 18 Adventures for FS X and Acceleration

by mark.avey on May 11, 2008

Combat Planes has released their F/A 18 Adventures for FS X and Acceleration mission pack.

F/A 18 Adventures for FS X and Acceleration

F/A 18 Adventures for Microsoft Flight Simulator X adds two campaigns to the FSX Acceleration Pack. With ten new missions to fly, you will deploy to Cold Lake Alberta and then to the Pacific to hone your tactical skills.

We explore two combat arenas: Alberta, Canada at Cold Lake, and north of Pearl Harbor in the Pacific. Cold Lake is the base for Canada’s 410 Cougar Squadron, an operational training squadron. It runs one fighter pilot course every year, training approximately 20 fighter pilots. The program consists of nine months of ground school, simulator flights and flying missions. Graduates are taken from the Fighter Lead-In Training Course and provides them with solid basic skills in both air-to-air and air-to-ground combat. Areas covered in depth include aircraft handling, instrument flight, formation flying, night flying, navigation, air-to-air refuelling, and weapons delivery and tactics.

410 Squadron also runs the annual Fighter Weapons Instructor Course (FWIC) and a Fighter Electronic Warfare and Advanced Radar (FEWAR) Course. Since 410 Squadron has always had some of the most experienced CF-18 pilots in the fighter community, it has become a recognized centre of excellence and is often charged with carrying out special fighter projects and leading the way for the remainder of the community. For these reasons, the internationally renowned Maple Flag Exercise is held on the range every year with every growing success.

FSDreamTeam updates Chicago O’Hare for FSX

by mark.avey on May 10, 2008

FSDreamTeam have updated their Chicago O’Hare airport for Flight Simulator X to version 1.1.

These are the fixes:

  • De-Icing added in the Pad 28 Aerea, there are 4 vehicles, operating only in Winter with Snow
  • Corrected some textures problems in the airport signs
  • Corrected names for stands M1 to M6
  • Night textures resolution doubled to fix the grid effect at night in FS9
  • AFCAD - Fixed taxiways width
  • AFCAD - Diamond technique used at runway intersections
  • AFCAD - Added instrumental approaches in FS9

The default AFCAD file for FS9 use the latest parking definitions from Harpsi, but doesn’t use any kind of star method or other tweaks. We prefer to leave those for addons AFCAD.

We added instrumental Approaches in FS9 (we already had it in FSX), so you should see correct Approaches on the GPS and the ATC will know about those procedures as well. Previously, we didn’t have approaches for runways that changed names from default (for example, 10/28).

In FS9, since Approaches are in the AFCAD file, but are not recognized by AFCAD program, we made a separate file named APPR_KORD.BGL, that ONLY includes approaches so, it will be possible to tweak or replace the main AFCAD without losing the approach procedures, since they reside in a separate file.

To apply the update, simply download again the installer. You can either Uninstall 1.0 or not, it shouldn’t make any difference, but it will not hurt either if you choose to Uninstall 1.0 first. In any case, no registration info is ever lost, as long as you don’t reinstall Windows.

Free FSX mission from Aerosoft

by mark.avey on May 10, 2008

Aerosoft has released a free demo mission from their Flight Tales 1 expansion pack. Please note that the Demo mission II requires FSX + Acceleration Pack.

The tales of your flying skills spread quite far and opened you a door at a major advertising company in Hamburg, Germany. You’ve already proved your skills to them in recent advert campaigns for some huge sports and food companies worldwide. Your next job seems a bit less rewarding, but it’ll benevertheless quite challenging.

You fly with a cameraman to a big oilrig in the North Sea and will make an advert video for the Oil Company.

The weather has been as bad as you could imagine for quite a few days now, but today is forecast to be much better. Early out of bed you climb into the Company’s Bell Jet Ranger and prepare for some great sunrise video shots. If everything works fine the job should be done within 20 minutes and you’ll be on your way back to Hamburg, where a hot bath tube, a warm bed and hopefully another Advert Pilot’s job in the Carribean will be waiting for you…
