FSXW Tutorials announced

by mark.avey on June 25, 2007

Flight Simulator X World has announced the first of a series of flash-based Flight Simulator tutorials:

“In an effort to differentiate Flight Simulator X World amongst the other FS sites, I hit upon the idea of featuring tutorials for those of us that are not familiar with, for example, installing aircraft, loading repaints, or using ILS.

I know that when I started simming, this kind of information was difficult to track down, usually in the bowels of some folder in a forum; even then, the information was sketchy and difficult to follow. Forget about having someone actually SHOW you how to do what you wanted.

So I hit upon the idea of tutorials…for the rest of us. Actual-sized demonstrations, on a step-by-step, easy to follow basis. There are many newbies out there that don’t know how to do many things that would add to their enjoyment of the simulation (such as repainting a plane), and encourage growth in the community. Heck, there are many things that even I don’t know how to do (but will learn)!

Today I uploaded my first tutorial, that’ll I’ll call my “beta” version, and I’d like you to try it, and let me know your thoughts, both good and….constructive (!). It’s Flash-based, so it starts up quickly, and has pause and start buttons. It’s for repainting the standard 747 in FSX.

If you go to this forum posting you’ll see the link to the Flash tutorial. Please leave comments in that forum.”

I just checked the tutorial out Mark and it is extremely well done. I think this is a great idea, a 10 out of 10! I know I have so much to learn and this format really makes it so much easier. I’ll be keeping a sharp eye out for further tutorials. Newbie or not, we can only benefit from tutorials like this! Good show!

Hey Mark - looks like all the folks who read your site have all followed your link and overloaded the server as it’s been down for the past few hours. Now that’s success for you :D

Without having seen the tutorial this does seem like a good resource for simmers. We all must have areas where we could use someone elses expertese to improve upon.

Oops! I’m sure it wasn’t all from here :)

It is a great idea, though, and I’m sure it will be very popular.

Wow, still can’t get on to the site, still saying it’s been temporarily grounded. Don’t know whether it’s because it’s being hammered or it really is down.

Oh dear :( I’ve emailed the owner to try and find out what’s happened to the site.

Thanks Mark, I do suspect that they’ve become a victim of their own success and that their hardware can’t keep up with demand.

Finally managed to get on the site and have a look at the tutorial, excellent idea. If it were me however I’d probably start with a fresh build of windows and FSX each time (GHOST). Not only so that the turtorials didn’t get on top of each other but I’m also amazed about the personal info he let loose such as his full name and email provider, his kids names (passwords anyone), the fact that he has a Dell computer with a wireless network which has potential security issues, the fact he’s running unlicensed software, his religeous pursuasion, and A folder called KidPix on his hard drive (entirely innocent I’m sure).

I’ve tried using the contact form on the guys site to warn him about the potential issues he’s opened himself up to re hacking & identity theft but I get a Winsock error whenever I post.

Mark - if you have any lines of communication with him perhaps you could suggest he tightens up his security and maybe re-works the tutorial.

Hi PieEater. I’ve contacted the owner of Flight Simulator X World directly and advised him about your observations.

Thanks Mark, I don’t think you can be too careful these days especially if you’re site is well publicised.
