Flight Simulator X Service Pack 1 is go!

by mark.avey on May 16, 2007

After many months of waiting, Microsoft have released Service Pack 1 for Flight Simulator X:
Flight Simulator X Service Pack 1 addresses these post-release customer concerns:
  • Activation and installation
  • Third-party add-on issues
  • Performance enhancements
  • Content issues

Download

Notice: Third-party content requires VS 2005 SP1 to successfully load. Third-party content developed for FSX using VS 2005 SP1 requires the new VS 2005 SP1 redistributable file, available here: Download

I’ve installed the 208Mb file. Installation required the original FSX DVD and I received 1 error during installation, referring to a problem with scripting. I OK’d the message and the install continued without problems.

During a very quick and totally unscientific test, my frame rates have improved from a normal 33 or so FPS at EGNT with my default Carenado Mentor aircraft to around 65 FPS. This was with all sliders set to approximately mid range. Just for fun, I cranked everything up to maximum detail and was very pleased to find around 45 FPS and, more importantly, very fluid motion. I’ll report more soon, but my initial impressions are very positive. The difference in visual quality was quite astonishing.

I have tried to download service pack 1 for FSX from your site and it records a download time of 19 hours! Is it possible to get the patch on disk?
Thank you

Hi. Which site are you downloading from? It won’t be from here on FlightSimX, as I’m not hosting it here. If it’s direct from the Microsoft site, it should be okay. It’s a big patch - what’s your connection speed?

After installing this pack, I can no longer play my FS:X When I try to start it, it says “application failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect” What went wrong???

Did you completely uninstall Flight Simulator X, delete all its directories, re-install then apply SP1?

Hi. Yes, looks like you’ll need to purchase it again. To be fair, this isn’t any different to anything else. If you lost, say, a book, you wouldn’t expect the shop to replace it for free.

Hey. I just installed Flight simulator X. I am trying to install now the Service pack 1, but because my FSX it’s not original at the installation time of the Service pack 1 it says:
This service pack requires the original release of flight simulator X. Please install flight simulator X and then start SP1 installation again. Do you know where can I download the service pack 1 or how can I fix this problem??
Thanks.

What exactly do you mean by “my FSX it’s not original”?!

8 Arturo Giron Jansa 02.10.08 at 9:13 pm

It is downloaded, so it’s not registered and to install the SP1 it says that it requires for my FSX to be original.

The stupidity of some people knows no bounds.

Arturo, this is a flight simulator web site, frequented by flight sim fans who have spent a great deal of money on their hobby in support of the hard working developers trying to make a living, yet you expect to get some free support for your illegally obtained software.

If you want to use it, buy it.

I’m sending your IP address and details to Microsoft, as I’m sure they’ll be interested in contacting you regarding your ill-gotten gains.

Do you absolutely need to uninstall FSX before you install SP1?

11 mark.avey 02.19.08 at 8:40 am

Hi Jon. Technically, you can install SP1 without uninstalling and reinstalling FSX, but I can almost guarantee you’ll have problems. I know, as that’s what I did!

I know it’s a pain, but you’ll most likely have to do it at some stage, so you might as well get it over with.

Hi,

Have tracked your comments on this page as I am attempting to install SP1 for a friend. He has SP1 on disc.

Uninstalled/reinstalled yesterday but getting an error as soon as I start the SP1 installation.

Any ideas please?

Gary

Hi Gary,

What’s the error message?

14 Gary Norwich 02.29.08 at 10:03 am

I double click the install file and get “preparing to install” followed by “Flight Simulator X SP1 installation did not complete successfully. To contact customer support: and then it lists some websites.

Just before it fails it is looking for a floppy disc in the drive.

15 Gary Norwich 02.29.08 at 10:12 am

I have just disconnected the floppy and attempted to load SP1 but it still failed.

Hi Gary,

Sorry to ask the obvious, but have you tried contacting support? If so, what did they say?

To anyone having difficulty installing SP1:

Iwas having the same problem as Gary.
Make sure you’re logged in as an Administrator. Once I did, it work. SP2, as well.
Cheers

I made 3 attempts to downlaod service pack 1, but each time only aprx 1/2 of the file downloads, then I get a “Download Complete” message and of course the file won’t run. What am I not doing, and can I get the SPs on a CD?
Thanks.

19 mark.avey 04.16.08 at 10:03 pm

Hi Ed. I think it’s been on a number of CD’s with Flight Sim magazines. If you have no luck finding one, send me your details (via the Contact page) and I’ll stick one in the post for you.

Now that I’ve installed SP1, when I attempt to look to the back from the cockpit view, I just see me seat (instead of the landscape behind me). Any thoughts??

21 Charles Whitworth 09.04.08 at 12:40 am

Hi, Im trying to install the service pack 1 but its giving me the error “Service pack requires original release”. I paid near full price for an ill-gotten copy of ebay and was crushed to recieve it.

Do you know how to crack the service pack so i can use it on this mooched copy?

Charles

22 mark.avey 09.04.08 at 7:37 am

Hi Charles,

Complain to eBay. They should kick the seller for selling counterfeit goods and give you a refund. I’d suggest you then go get a legitimate copy - the price is low enough now.

23 Charles Whitworth 09.04.08 at 12:57 pm

I complained a while ago… As usual though they have done nothing. Also to add insult to injury, the cheeky b@stard seller left ME negative feedback!!!

Guess I will buy it from a reputable dealer this time. Do you know of any online shops that will have it cheaply? Im already a little steamed about having to buy it twice but oh well

Charles.

24 mark.avey 09.04.08 at 8:02 pm

I know the feeling, Charles. I’ve been stung like this on eBay in the past, and vowed to never purchase software via them any longer.

Amazon are probably as good as any, or Game.

Cheers,

Mark
