FS Dreamscapes Utah 10m Mesh+ Terrain
FS Dreamscapes (a new Flight Simulator add-on developer) has released their first product - Utah 10m Mesh+ Terrain:
The FS Dreamscapes Utah 10m Mesh+ Terrain is a new high quality 10m Mesh Terrain product for Microsoft Flight Simulator X aimed at providing the best quality mesh to flight simmers.
Imagine your dream to fly low level through canyons with walls so close that your wingtips only just fit. Imagine flying at low level by the seat of your pants, the adrenaline pumping as you snake and wind your way through canyons and vistas you never thought possible in a simulator. Imagine your local landscape rendered at the highest possible resolution available for the terrain, looking every bit as true to life as it does right outside your window.
The 10m Mesh+ Terrain is based upon the 10 meter National Elevation Dataset (NED) produced by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The terrain is based upon the most current available data.
This terrain is 3 times more detailed than the default FSX terrain mesh for Utah. No longer are canyons 30m wide, now you can experience true seat of the pants flying through canyons and valleys as close as 10m between walls. It makes for great low level helicopter flying and exploring unique geological formations that only 10m terrain can provide.
Unlike other mesh at 10m resolution, the Utah 10m Mesh+ Terrain is much smoother in its elevation changes than all other meshes due to the way the data is compiled. Our mesh has fractional elevation data which means elevation changes to 1/10th of a meter vertically for all elevation changes. The end result is a terrain which is more accurate to real life and subtle differences in elevation changes allows for great bush flying when landing away from airstrips.
WHAT’S UNIQUE ABOUT MESH+ TERRAIN
The FS Dreamscapes Mesh+ Terrain is aimed at providing the best quality mesh for Microsoft Flight Simulator X.
It also has many high quality features, including:
10m USGS NED based elevation spacing horizontally.
32bit Source Data, all included terrain has been rendered from 32bit source data. This translates into much higher resolution vertically in the dataset. Other competing terrain mesh products have been compiled with 16bit data which can lead to banding and striping in the terrain. Our terrain eliminates most of those issues.
Fractional Elevation Sampling, fractions of a meter vertically (10.2m, 10.6m) compared to the regular mesh with only whole numbers (10m, 11m) etc. This translates into smoother terrain on the ground and makes for a much more landable terrain and fewer glitches.
85% Compression Settings, using the resample tool, we’ve elected to go for 85% compression on the terrain in order to keep file sizes small as possible with the highest resolution in the terrain. Other competing terrain mesh at the time of release were compiled at 85% compression settings, the difference being is ours has higher resolution in the vertical plane.
