FSX Acceleration to include Service Pack 2 and DX10 updates

by mark.avey on October 3, 2007

Update: You can now order Flight Simulator X: Acceleration from the FlightSim Pilot Shop.

Phil Taylor reports on his blog that Flight Simulator X: Acceleration will include the Service Pack 2 updates:

Acceleration has RTM’ed. Acceleration Pack contains the SP2 fixes; including both DX9 and DX10 work. Acceleration Pack looks really good, and for the $30 US list price there is a lot of value with 3 aircraft (F-18 jet, P-51 racer, EH101 helo), along with 30+ missions and several new “sim features like a functional carrier, slingloads and hoists for the helo, as well as the multiplayer racing experience. And I am probably forgetting features. There is quite a bit of value there.

Acceleration will be available in late October. FSX-SP2 will be available sometime after Acceleration Pack and before Christmas. Please note both SP2 and Acceleration Pack will require FSX-SP1 to be installed. As I have previously stated, SP2 will include DX9 fixes as well as DX10 support. So with the release of SP2, Aces will have fulfilled its commitment to 2 updates for FSX RTM customers in 2007.

If I’m reading this correctly, Acceleration contains SP2, but SP2 will also be available for people that don’t purchase Acceleration as a separate download. I’m sure Phil will correct me if I’m wrong.

Hi Ed - do let us know what you think when you’ve had a chance to try it out.

Well I’ve had more time with FSX acceleration and it’s certainly worth the £20 I paid for it. Only just though.

With DX10 preview enabled I get weird tarmac glitches and flashesand this has been reported elsewhere too. It’s irritating to receive an update only to find bugs. My specs are Vista64, Intel E6600 C2D, NVidia 8800 GTS 640 and 4Gb RAM. I upgraded my O/S to Vista64 and added another 2Gb making 4Gb at the same time as receiving FSX Acceleration so it’s hard to tell where the performance gain come from but it’s certainly smoother to the point I’ve been able to nudge up the autogen slightly.

But, the best thing of all is the EH101. WHAT a piece of kit that is, it’s awesome! The F18 is too sensitive and seems detached somehow. The P-51D Mustang is good but I prefer the Piper Warrior I bought from Just Flight to be honest.

I’m also thoroughly enjoying the extra missions you get with this expansion pack.

What I did expect was a better looking FSX due to DX10 but it just didn’t happen. Speed has improved slightly but, I don’t know, maybe my expectations were set when SP1 was delivered and we all know the huge gains that gave us. Maybe the same for SP2 was too much too ask for?

Hi Ed. Good to see you back :)
Very interesting comments re Acceleration. I would imagine your hardware upgrade would definitely have improved FSX. Did you notice any improvement in the quality of the graphics in FSX with DX10? This is particularly interesting for me. I’m looking for a new laptop and if DX10 really doesn’t make a lot of difference, it could make a difference to the spec machine I end up getting.

Thanks for the detailed report.

I wouldn’t rely on DX10 to deliver eye candy, just performance. It surprises me to hear you’re buying a laptop to sim with since most mobile devices have power saving processors.

The one big jump in performance I got with FSX didn’t come from better memory, or even getting my NVidia 8800GTS, but clocking my processor from 2.4GHz to 3GHz. BIG results! But then FSX is CPU bound and multi-cores only do so much so all things being equal, GHz is where it’s at!

Good luck with the new purchase.

I’ve only ever used a laptop for Flight Simulator use for the past 4 years or so. I just don’t have the space at home to be able to set up a permanent rig, much as I’d like to. The current laptop I have runs FSX very well - I’m very pleased with the performance. The only reason I’m upgrading is because my current one is starting to show its age, with some dead pixels appearing etc.

With a good laptop, you can get comparable performance to that of a good desktop, but at a price. When my current rig was reviewed, it was benchmarked as the 2nd quickest machine PC Pro had ever seen, laptop or desktop, so it’s certainly up to the job.

I just wanted to post a quick comment on here about Flight Simulator X. I’ve used Flight Simulator for years and in fact own 2000, 2002, 2004, and now the awesome X. I myself run Flight Simulator X on a laptop and honestly have found it to run pretty well. So to mark.avey, go ahead on your laptop plans buddy, as long as you get the right one you should be all set. Just understand that mine is running a Core 2 Duo processor at 1.7 Ghz, 2 GB memory, an NVidia GeForce GO 7600 Graphics card, and a SATA hard Drive. I bought the “decked out” machine, paid a pretty penny too just as mark.avey suggested in his post. I myself am very impressed with Microsoft for releasing this version of Flight Simulator. I just bought Acceleration and am anxious to try it out, I think it will be a good add-on to X.

Hi Andrew. I decided on a MacBook Pro in the end and have been delighted with the machine, both in “Mac Mode” and using Vista and FSX - I’m getting some terrific performance :)

I have FSX installed with the SP1 upgrade, but am continually having problems with the game, my set up is an Intel 2 Duo core 3GHZ, with 3GB RAM, an 8800 GTS NVIDIA graphics card, running XP WIndows, but the game keeps crashing due to CPU problems, I don’t think this system can handle it, I have tried multiple settings, but seems to make no difference, if anyone has any good ideas i will be grateful, maybe I need to purchase FSZ acceleration to cure problems, but I don’t want to spend money unnecessarily. Hi John,

Add SP2 as well, turn off all land, sea and air traffic, turn autogen off and scenery complexity off. Now pick a standard aircraft, the Maule for example and take off to see how performance and stability improves.

Next is sign up over at the forum and let us know how it goes. Posting solutions to problems in the forum makes it easier for others to find.
