Has the dust settled?

by mark.avey on August 20, 2007

It occurred to me yesterday whilst continuing my around the world flight in Flight Simulator X that I couldn’t actually remember the last time I’d started Flight Simulator 9 other than to write a review or specifically to try out some new FS9 specific software.

During the first few months of Flight Simulator X’s release, I often returned to FS9. Looking back, I guess the main reasons were:

  • Lack of my favourite add-ons for FSX
  • Performance issues with FSX
  • A continued stream of new add-ons still coming out for FS9

It seems obvious now to me that the turning point, for me at least, was the release of Service Pack 1 for Flight Simulator X. I also think it coincided with the release of Active Sky X and X Graphics from HiFi Simulation which has totally transformed the simulator for me. Look at this screenshot:

This static shot doesn’t do it full justice, but it looked truly stunning. It was at this point that I realised that I didn’t want to go back to anything “less” than this.

Also, looking back over past posts, the number of new releases for Flight Simulator 9 is certainly reducing, which is to be expected as more and more developers turn their attention to Flight Simulator X.

There is one other thing to be considered, though, and that’s my aircraft choice. Back in FS9 days, I was a dedicated “Heavy” flyer, but I’ve not got a preference for hand-flying light aircraft, such as the wonderful Real Air SF260 shown above. Now, I’m not sure if I moved to GA aircraft because in the early days of FSX that’s pretty much all their was, or if it was for some other reason (I think the real reason is that I actually have less time to “fly” these days, so it was an obvious choice to just jump in a “kick the tyres and get in the air” aircraft, rather than spending half an hour setting up an FMC etc), but it is a fact that GA add-ons have far less performance impact on the simulator than “Systems” add-ons, such as the “Heavies”.

Whatever the reason, I’m now more than happy with Flight Simulator X, it’s performance on my particular hardware and the overall experience I get from it.

So, what’s your experience? If you took the plunge with FSX, are you now converted?

Hi Mark. I have been an FSX convert since it’s release. I purchased a new computer JUST for FSX and nothing else. It is new technology and requires a fairly powerful computer to run it. But I have never regretted leaving FS9 behind. simply put, FSX is AWESOME! With great add-ons coming out fast and furious. I also have Active Sky X and X Graphics, and they are superb programs. Along with the release of Service Pack 1 and numerous planes, scenery, etc.,that I have purchased, FSX just keeps getting better! I still know some people who removed FSX and continue to fly FS9,butmostly due to older computers that can not handle FSX decently. I think though that it’s only a matter of time before they upgrade computers and they will be flying FSX. Also Mark, I have that great little SF260 and a number of other GA aircraft, including the Glassair, and they are just fantastic, and a blast to fly!! But I still enjoy the ‘heavies’, and anything in between! Yes Mark,I am a happy, proud, FSX convert! It is a great experience!!

Hi Dave. Good to hear you’re thinking about moving to FSX. I haven’t got any personal experience of Alpine Systems, but I’ve just taken a look at the spec for the mid-range unit and I can’t see anything there that would make me concerned. In fact, quite the opposite!

Have any other readers any experience of their gear?

Do let us know how you get on.
