I’m off around the world!

2007-7-8_10-50-53-328 I’ve been wanting to do a complete “around the world” trip in a sim for ages. I’ve tried it before, using mostly heavy aircraft. I got about half way around once, but, to be honest, it got a bit boring, spending hours on long-haul flights.

So, I’ve decided to take a completely different approach. I’m basically “planning” it as I go along, using Aerosoft’s Beaver X in Flight Simulator X (see review here). What made me decide on that aircraft was the addition of a special PC Pilot version which has a massive extra internal fuel tank, so I can do some longer legs if I feel like it.

I’ve created a map on Google Maps so you can follow my progress and even join me if you like.

I started today, with leg 1 being a very short hop from my home airport of Newcastle, UK (EGNT) to Durham Tees (EGNV). I’m using real weather via Active Sky X (I’ll be reviewing this soon) and it was a pretty murky grey start to the trip, as you’d expect from this part of the world! The screenshot shows my take-off from EGNT. I shall report on the trip as I progress.

Wish me luck :)

Edit: I’ve copied this to the forum so it’ll be easier to update and follow progress.

I shall look forward to this. Good choice on the craft too. Hopping about from country to country and sitting below the cloud base should provide some stunning screens, particularly with Active Sky.

I’m currently out of FSX because my controller gave up recently but I’m waiting on a new Saitek controller to be delivered. My fix is coming in the form of flying lessons in a Piper Warrior PA28 out of Lydd Airport. I sat in the Cessna 152 but there was no room for the instructor so the Piper it is. Amazing how much info FSX carries compared to flying for real, the only difference is the sheer workload of flying for real such as trim, yaw, carb heat, mixture etc.

A suggestion! Since you’re on this trip, how about taking it online? Perhaps others can join you or do you feel they’ll be too many jockeys in Harriers buzzing past you?

Thanks for the support, guys :)

I’ve had a single lesson in a PA28, Ed – thoroughly enjoyed it. Are you going for your PPL?

Multiplayer sounds fun. Would you recommend the FSX multiplayer, or some third party method?

I didn’t think about changing the reg of the aircraft – good idea, Jason.

I’m also using X Graphics, so hopefully there should be some good screenshots coming.

Sure am. Doing circuit training right now but I’ve not been doing it long and have a looong way to go. Already fearing going solo :(

Not sure it matters too much. Perhaps create a session with a password only your website contains to keep the no-readers out.

I bought the combination too and it’s superb.

Hi Mark, if you decide to do your flights in Multiplayer mode dont forget to post your estimated departure times, a rough flight-plan and estimated flight times. Perhaps you could open up a new thread in the forums.

I’ve not tried Multiplayer before so this sounds like a good introduction and I’d be up to joining you on some legs when I can. I’ve not got the Beaver but I guess that’s not so important as long as range doesn’t become an issue, I’m thinking perhaps of the C182RG I’ve been flying a lot recently. Will you be using time compression, I don’t know if that’s available on Multiplayer ?!?

Anyhow Bon Voyage, and dont forget the postcards :D

Good idea re adding it to the forum – I’ve done as you suggested and you can find it at http://www.flightsimx.co.uk/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=12

You running FSX, PieEater? If so, it has a Beaver as one of the default aircraft :)

BTW, I tried setting up the FSX multiplayer as a test for Leg 2, but it disconnected soon after I set the flight up. I’ll give it another try later.

Hi Mark, I set up a multiplayer flight and flew from Exeter to Plymouth fine, I did have to allow a new connection through my Firewall, so maybe you need to check your Firewall settings?

Hi PieEater – firewall is okay, as I’ve used FSX multiplayer before. I think it was just GameSpy having a strop :)
