One of the recommendations always made regarding optimising your computer for Flight Simulator is to maintain a healthy disk, keeping it as defragmented as possible. I’ve tried numerous defragmenters, some costing in excess of $50.00 and I’ve always ran into problems with them, eventually uninstalling them, primarily due to them “hogging” the system. This invariably meant that, although I had a nicely defragged drive, the performance loss from doing the defragmentation more than offset any gains.

I was therefore initially reluctant to try out Magical Defrag from Ashampoo, thinking to myself that an application costing only $14.99 couldn’t possibly be better than one costing over $50.00. How wrong I could be!

It’s a breeze to use. Simply install it and pretty much forget about it. Whenever your computer isn’t in use for more than a few seconds, it gets to work defragmenting your drive. As soon as you start using your computer again, defragmenting stops, returning all CPU performance to your own applications. It’s this seamless automation that impresses me most. When I’m simming, I’m losing no performance to the tool and whenever I leave my machine, it’s busy improving its performance. Having run other defragmentation tools after Magic Defrag has done its stuff, I can confirm it’s doing its job correctly.

I strongly recommend this to anyone who wants to keep their system in top shape and at this price, you can’t go wrong. They’re offering a 30 day free trial, so you’ve really got nothing to lose by giving it a try.

From other reviews of this software that I found on the web this really does seem to be an excellent product if you just want an install it and forget it approach to defragging. Personally though I try to make it a habit of doing a disc clean (using the wonderful ccleaner) and a defrag on a regular basis.
