Free online route planning site launched

by mark.avey on August 12, 2007

Sim-Route has today opened it’s doors, providing a free flight planning tool for Flight Simulator users. I’ve given it a try and it’s pretty good, especially for this price!

Sim-route.com is a brand new website dedicated to the Microsoft Flight Simulator community. Sim-route provides FREE navigation data based on a real world database to aid flight planning. Our comprehensive search engine provides detailed route information from NAT’s, waypoints, frequencies, airport frequencies, departure - en-route - destination real world weather and much more at the click of a button! Our system enables you to print complete reports so that you have it handy whilst in flight! Don’t take our word for it, see for yourself!

I planned a route from EGNT to EGSS and it came back with the following detailed data:

Route Breakdown:

EGNT (0.0nm) -DCT-> GIRLI (20.0nm) -P18-> TILNI (30.0nm) -UP18->
GASKO (49.7nm) -P18-> ABKAT (54.3nm) -UP18-> POL (79.0nm) -A47->
POL11 (90.5nm) -A47-> EG179 (113.7nm) -A47-> LIC19 (121.0nm) -A47->

Update: The following message has been posted on the Sim-Route web site:

“As some of you may or may not be aware the website mentioned above has been attacking our server with a DOS attack for a few days now which has been causing a slow response when retrieving routes. Initially we received an email from them ordering us to close down operations due to copyright infringement. The so called website has threatened legal actions to close down our website as our routes return the same data. Which, is correct as we use the same database, CYCLE 0708 as do rfinder. This database isn’t just for rfinder to use and is available at many places for a fee. Within the last 24 hours our system has been hacked and search logic completely screwed up returning only one set of routes for some places. Legal action is being sought with rfinder but due to their location it is proving nearly impossible. We admit security on the search logic has been slack but this wasn’t expected. We are currently working to resolve this and hope to have the number one route finder, sim-route.com back up and running for you all to use. In my honest opinion with the HUGE amount of traffic we have been getting it is no wonder rfinder felt the need to resort to this in order to keep their commercial side going. Please keep posted for developments”

I’ve also had someone who appears to be from RFinder try and post a message here.

I don’t know the legalities, so am just updating this with what I know so far.

In the interests of fairness and balance, I have allowed the above comment through, so both sides of the story are known. I am not, and will not, take sides in this situation, especially as I have no idea which side is correct.

This will be the last comment I allow through on the subject unless it is resolved, in which case I shall announce the fact. FlightSimX is not the place to resolve this.

I sincerely hope, for everyone’s sake, that it is resolved quickly.
